Is DIY Coolsculpting Advisable? Let’s Hear From The Experts
Even if you have never heard of Zeltiq CoolSculpting before, a quick google search will probably get you the idea – reducing body fat by freezing it off. Why freezing body fat? Because the fat will die and be naturally deposed by our body. The science behind this was discovered by Harvard University scientists, Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD. The observation of the development of dimples on some children after eating popsicles led to the discovery that target and destroy fat cells and there will be no casualty!
Not only is CoolSculpting non-invasive and innovative, the cost of CoolSculpting also tends to be noticeably lower in comparison with Liposuction, another popular fat reduction treatment that is invasive.
So now, you know how CoolSculpting works, and you know it’s going to cost you though not as much as Liposuction, you’re now probably thinking: Can I just freeze off that love handle fat at home on my own? After all, freezing off fats with no surgery required sounds pretty simple, right?
I know that’s how it sounds like, but think again.
Before you run off to your local supermarket for a full shopping cart of ice, please allow me just say one simple word:
Now, as strange as it sounds, I am a cold weather person. I genuinely enjoy cold weather and walking around town feeling a little cold, but even someone like me, isn’t a fan of frostbite, did I mention that it’s a word that ends with “bite”?
Sure, the cost of one hundred ice packs is probably a lot cheaper is a session of CoolSculpting, but like my first boss always said to me, what seems to be the cheapest at first usually ends up the most expensive.
The likelihood of you getting a frostbite while attempting CoolSculpting at home is very high, because most of us don’t know what we’re doing. And unlike CoolSculpting, frostbite can and will cause serious damage in your skin and more. Your skin will die if you freeze it. There’s no doubt about it. The cost of the medical attention and treatment you are going to need after getting frostbite will probably add up and ended up being higher than cost of CoolSculpting treatments, let’s not forget the down time that might be needed, for the most of us, the longer we’re down, the longer we’re not generating income. The DIY CoolScupting could be one big expensive lesson in the end.
Wait… So how does CoolScupting “freeze” my skin without giving me frostbite?
Well, first of all, it is the fat cells that CoolScupting (actually, the device used in CoolScupting) is “freezing”.
Secondly, there’s a recent it took scientists to develop devices for CoolSculpting treatments, also we call it “fat freezing” for the sensation that comes with the treatment, the device used in CoolSculpting actually just extracts heat from fatty tissue. Leyda Elizabeth Bowes, MD from Bowes Dermatology in Miami has shared her expert insight online as the following:
“…Coolsculpting utilizes a very specific algorithm for gradually extracting the heat from the fatty tissue. This may be called cooling, but never freezing. This algorithm, carefully studied and designed by world renowned scientist and engineers, is what makes this technology so safe, as well as effective…” 1
Furthermore, a good point was also raised by Ted Brezel, MD, a Long Island Dermatologist:
“CoolSculpting is performed using a device that rather than delivering cold actually extracts energy (thereby cooling) the tissue. The device carefully monitors this process with continual feedback so that the temperatures achieved are such that the fat will freeze but not so cold that other tissue such as skin, muscles, nerves or blood vessels will. One could never monitor such a process with the use of an ice bag… ” 1
So that should be enough to stop you from attempting DIY CoolScupting at home, and stop anyone who’s thinking of doing it. That is, unless your friend is probably trained and using the actual CoolScupting device, Zeltiq. And if you really, really just want to enjoy the freedom to CoolScupting at home, the only way to do it is to purchase Zeltiq and all necessary equipment, get trained and acquired all relevant knowledge.
And unless you’re planning to do that for a living, the cost of all that mentioned above definitely will be jaw dropping compares to the actual cost of CoolScupting treatment, done by professionals.
Now, hopping in a clinic and stay still for 30 – 60 minutes and have all that done for you sounds pretty good doesn’t it?[sgmb id=1]
