15 Everyday Things You can do to Improve Your Complexion Overnight
Why put up with accelerated aging and a bad complexion when you can have youthful, radiant skin instead? Follow these easy, everyday steps and see your complexion improve overnight!
Be mindful of your environment

Various indoor pollutants and a smoky environment will worsen your skin condition. Smoke leads to the release of free radicals that damage skin and make you age faster. Dry indoor air (especially in the office!) can dehydrate skin and deepen fine lines. This can be solved by putting a humidifier in the room.
Drink Green Tea
Green tea has numerous properties that make it a staple for your skin care routine. Green tea can prevent collagen destruction that leads to sun damage such as wrinkles, lines, and discoloration.

Green tea also has antioxidants which help you recover from oxidative damage, caused by free radicals in your environment, to your skin. It is also anti-inflammatory and is good for soothing red, blotchy, and irritated skin.
Eat more fibre and avoid sugar

Fibre is great for getting rid of the toxins in your body and detoxing your digestive system. Digestive problems often lead to skin impurities so stock up on fruits and vegetables to gain your glowing complexion back! On the other hand, processed sugar glycates collagen, which in turn, makes your skin look older.
Go for water-based hair products
Hair products may contain oil or wax, which can clog pores and cause acne and breakouts. Even if you manage to avoid getting them on your skin during application, they may still touch your skin when you shower or when you sweat. Therefore, it would be better to use products with water-based formulas instead!
Stress leads to its own mountain of problems and is related to skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis. When a body is under stress, it produces more hormones like cortisol which makes your skin oilier and weakens your body’s ability to fight off bacteria.
To combat this, relax more! Stress-management techniques such as meditation and deep-breathing help.

Your body rejuvenates and repairs itself while it sleeps, and so too does your skin. If you’re sleep-deprived, you’re only going to put more stress on your body, causing it to release more adrenaline and cortisol. This, in turn, can trigger more skin conditions, such as breakouts and acne. Getting seven to eight hours of sleep a day is a surefire (and free!) way to improve your complexion.
If you want to slow aging down, exfoliation is your best friend. It promotes cell growth, unclogs your pores, removes dead skin and dirt, and makes you look more youthful. Try different exfoliation methods and monitor how your skin reacts as different skin types react differently and it’s hard to recommend one product in particular.
Switch to a plain toothpaste (to avoid perioral dermatitis)

If you have or wish to avoid perioral dermatitis, avoid toothpaste with tartar-control ingredients or flavored toothpaste. Using a basic toothpaste is a good way to avoid this skin condition. If you already have it, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist to get antibiotics for it.
Wear sunblock both outdoors and indoors
The sun is a major contribution to aging, wrinkling skin and brown spots as UV rays damage your collagen and elastic tissue, causing wrinkles.

Wearing sunblock when you’re out and about is one of the best ways to maintain your youthful complexion. If you’re outdoors during 10am to 3pm, when the sun is at its strongest, minimizing your exposure to the sun by wearing a hat would be the best option.
You might think that as an office worker who is only outdoors 1-2 hours a day, sunblock is unnecessary. However, UV rays can penetrate windows and still cause sun damage to your skin, even if you’re indoors. This applies to car windows as well and is why people usually have more sun damage on the side that’s more exposed to the sun while they are driving. Scarily enough, even fluorescent bulbs and electronic devices let in UV rays!
Be mindful of what medication you’re taking
Different medicines can cause different skin conditions. Diuretics, diabetes treatments, and antibiotics may make your skin more prone to sun damage while antibiotics, fertility drugs, and antiseizure medications can cause your skin to breakout. Even antihistamines, diuretics, and some forms of antidepressants can cause dry skin. This doesn’t mean you should stop your treatment, however. If your complexion is taking a great hit because of the medication you’re using, it could be wise to talk to your doctor about it, and s/he might be able to recommend a different medicine or lower your dosage.
Drink more water
Common advice, but that’s only because it really works. Drinking water is a good way to detox and to keep yourself hydrated. Hydrated skin is plumped up from within and tends to look fuller and smoother. Water also lowers the concentration of oil in your skin, decreasing your chances of breaking out.

Drinking more water also helps to clear toxins from your body, prevent tightness and dryness, and minimize the appearance of wrinkles. In addition to that, skin is up to 15% water. In indoor, climate-controlled places, the moisture in your skin evaporates quickly and your skin cannot produce enough moisture to replace what’s lost. Drinking a ton of water will help this.
Avoid touching your face
Your hands contain a whole host of germs. The more your touch your face during the day, the more dirt and bacteria you’d get onto your skin which will lead to more breakups. This applies to pimple-popping as well! Pimple-popping, unless done by a professional, isn’t recommended as it can lead to more skin irritation and scarring. By the same token, you should wash your hands first before you use them to wash your face!
Use a facial toner and moisturizer
It’s simple: you protect your skin during the day and repair your skin at night!
During the day, using a toner before you use makeup and sunblock would help guard your pores against getting too clogged up as it rebalances your skin’s pH and tightens up your pores.

Moisturizers at night are a must. Not only do they help hydrate your skin, they also aid your skin in rejuvenation and are great for all skin types! Even if you have acne-prone or oily skin, moisturizer should be a staple in your beauty routine. Skin that is too dry is unable to shed, leading the dead skin to remain on your skin which may lead to clogged pores and subsequent blemishes.
Cleanse your skin
Regardless of whether you have oily skin or dry skin, cleansing your face is one of the most important steps in your skincare routine. During the day, all manners of dust and dirt get onto your skin. These, and the makeup you use, will clog your pores and cause you to breakout or get inflamed and dull skin if you do not cleanse your skin before heading to bed.

However, especially if you have oily skin, this does not mean you should over-wash your face. Washing your face too often may strip your complexion of all its natural oils, causing your glands to produce even more oil to compensate for the loss. This, in turn, would lead to more breakouts and acne. A way to get rid of excess oil during the day would be to blot (not rub) your face with blotting paper.
Even people with dry skin should cleanse daily.
If you have dry skin, it may even more important to wash your face as a preventive measure against dryness and eczema. A nonsoap cleanser would be the best and it would help to replace the moisture in your skin instead of stripping your skin’s natural barriers away. If you feel that your skin is too dry, use moisturizer after cleansing your skin.
Be mindful of the water used.
The temperature and type of water matters as well.
When you first wash your face, use warm water which will allow your pores to open up. This makes the cleanser more effective. After you’re done cleansing, use colder water so as to close your pores.
Using hot water to cleanse can be very drying for your skin. Warm water would be a better alternative.
To go one step further, you could alter your skin-care products according to the water quality in your area. If your water is soft, avoid using a large amount of cleanser as soft water does not remove soap well and there may be traces of soap left on your skin. If your water is hard, use nonsoap cleansers. Hard water doesn’t allow soap to lather easily which may cause you to use more cleanser on your face which may cause your skin to be dry. Nonsoap cleansers are not meant to lather and are a good way to work around this.
